So why chose Gran Alicant for your summer holiday?

Maybe it’s the sandy beaches, the nearby golf courses, local water sports or the wide choice of restaurants (particularly sea food) – or maybe it’s that it’s within fifteen minutes from Alicante international airport.

Located 15kms from Alicante city and 5kms from the cosmopolitan resort of Santa Pola famous for its working fishing port, bars, restaurants, beaches and water sports Gran Alicant has everything that a family needs for a great holiday on its doorstep .

The apartment is set in a gated, secure complex a few minutes’ walk from a bird sanctuary (the Clot de Galvany) and close to the Santa Pola natural park with its population of flamingos and salt water lakes

Gran Alacant is a small resort with a year round population of 10,000

The Costa Blanca. (the “White Coast”), has hundreds of miles of beaches and the main beach in ran Alicant, Playa Carabassi,- a blue flag beach – has a mile of sandy beach with boarded access for pushchairs and beach beds, umbrellas and beach bars in the summer.

If sunbathing is too “laid back” for you then the water sports centre offering windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, stand-up paddle, kite surfing and paragliding is very popular as are sand dune walks leading to the salt marshes and wetlands where you can see native plants and shrubs.

The beach is safe with lifeguards in the summer and the waters are warm and shallow.Market

At the top end of the resort which can be reached by a ride on the tourist train (€3 adult fare for unlimited trips all day) there is small playground close to the tourist information office with a nice café set in the shade and stunning views over the Mediterranean – on Thursday morning there is a large open air marker held.

Small children will also enjoy the theme park in Santa Pola which has about 30 fairground rides.

Gran Alicant has more than thirty restaurants serving regional cuisine such as paella, fresh fish and shellfish as well as Indian, Chinese, Mexican, Argentinean, Dutch and of course English cuisine.

Those preferring to cook at home can buy essentials from the small supermarket less than five minutes from the apartment or a trip to the Centro Commercial Gran Alacant shopping centre on the outskirts of town by the N332 road – a mile and a half from the apartment and on the tourist train route

As well as three supermarkets you can buy clothes, get a haircut, drink and dine in a variety of bars and restaurants and visit over 40 shops and businesses.

Gourmets are advised to visit the neighbouring beach resort of Santa Pola. A very “Spanish” resort it is the largest fishing port on the Costa’s and the fish and shellfish caught by the local fishermen are prepared in the local restaurants especially those close to the fish market.

If you like the sound of a full on traditional Spanish city life, 10 minutes to the north of Gran Alacant is Alicante. The city has fantastic beaches itself , a classy marina with fine seafood restaurants, an historic old town with traditional pretty squares, bars and shops as well as museums and a superb castle set on the point overlooking the city which is claimed to be one  of the finest in all of Spain.

Although many holiday makers choose to hire a car (they can be hired for a week for as little as € 120) it is easy to travel around without as there are frequent daily buses to the airport, Alicante and Santa Pola as well as an orbital bus around Gran Alacant.

There’s also the tourist train which stops at the main urbanisations in the town as well as the beach and Gran Alacant shopping centre.
